Brave New Bristol
Fantasy Insight-Bristol 2

By Dennis Michelsen
168,000 fans cram into Bristol Motor Speedway twice a year to watch the modern day equivalent of the chariot races! When word came out that Speedway Motorsports was planning to re-pave Bristol many of those fans held their breath. Would SMI kill Bristol? Once crews began working on the speedway they realized how messed up the pavement really was. New construction techniques needed to be developed to lay down variable banking with brand new cement. Track management also made sure the rough spots that come with new cement paving were smoothed out as much as possible by having some of the nation's best late model stockcar drivers put laps on the new surface. The result is a much smoother Bristol with variable banking. If the minor league racers are any indication, the new surface will provide the best racing ever seen at Bristol Motor Speedway! Of course this will change the way the surface races, which will make handicapping the race even tougher than ever. But at the end of the long weekend of racing at Bristol Motor Speedway; Speedway Motorsports will ask the engineers how to devise a way to build another 168,000 seats. That is how fantastic the new track will be for the racers!

Fast Facts of the Week Presented by www.nascapper.com
Darrell Waltrip won seven races in a row and 12 overall at Bristol

Kurt Busch and Jeff Gordon top the list for wins by active drivers at 5 each

Qualifying is critical, thanks mainly to the tight pit row. 22.6% of winners started on the pole and 82% started in the top ten

New pavement provides drivers with variable banking

This will be the first race for Nextel Cup drivers on the new pavement

Fantasy Racing by the Numbers
My unique Power Ratings are back and better than ever for 2007! Combining the three most important factors the numbers never lie. Separate the pretenders from the contenders each week with track type, horses for courses, and consistency factored into one easy to use Power Rating. The key numbers to remember are 80 and 250. A rating of 80 is an acceptable risk for any of the individual ratings and 250 is the cut off for the complete Power Rating. Drivers topping these minimums have a much higher percentage of top ten finishes over the past three seasons! (Only drivers meeting the minimum will be shown in the individual ratings with the top 25 for Power Ratings shown)
