Your
Grades Needed Too
Making the Grade-NASCAR Banquet 2007
By Dennis Michelsen (RaceTalkRadio.com)
Each season the NASCAR Cup banquet is the last chance
for the fans to see their favorite drivers until Daytona.
There have been quite a few memorable moments in the past.
This year the production work and the banquet itself might
have been the best ever. Unfortunately ESPN and NASCAR
did a great job of hiding the banquet from the fans by
placing it on ESPN Classic... MORE

GEM

Making the Grade-Homestead/Miami
By Dennis Michelsen (RaceTalkRadio.com)
Way back when in 2006 Kasey Kahne won more races than
any other driver in NASCAR's Nextel Cup division. Fast
forward one whole year and not only did all three Gillette-Evernham's
teams not win a race, they only posted one top five finish
all season! How did the wheels fall off this team so fast?...

Jacques'd Up in the Desert
Making the Grade-Phoenix Fall Race
By Dennis Michelsen (RaceTalkRadio.com)
Another race and more hard wrecks involving Jacques Villeneuve.
There is no doubt that if this was any other up and coming
racer he would be sent back down to the lower levels to
get some seasoning. Last year NASCAR was quick to hold
up David Ragan after a rough outing at Martinsville. This
year NASCAR has given a free pass to Villeneuve and he
has done nothing to inspire confidence!... MORE

Saved More Money at Nashville
By Dennis Michelsen
NASCAR fans are more brand aware than your average consumer.
Many fans will buy the NASCAR related brand over another
even if the price is higher and I am no different. Most
of the home improvement store industry is involved in
NASCAR's highest level of racing. I had been a regular
at Menards for my home improvement needs but I am so irritated
I think I will visit Home Depot for a while... MORE

Making the Grade-Texas Fall Race Weekend
By Dennis Michelsen (RaceTalkRadio.com)
After that nutty week of racing in Atlanta it was nice

Kenseth showed these guys still want to win races real
bad... MORE

Worst
Weekend of Racing Ever?
Making the Grade-Atlanta Fall Race Weekend
By Dennis Michelsen (RaceTalkRadio.com)
Hey NASCAR do you wonder why there were empty seats at
Atlanta on Sunday? Oh sure you can blame it on the drought
or the price of gas or 4000 other things but the way the
race ended on Sunday might also explain it! Was this your
first rodeo? What ever happened to waving off a restart?...

What
is Up With Crazy Cousin Carl
By Dennis Michelsen
On a rainy day in Mansfield, Ohio I got the weird idea
to find out if Carl Edwards was just as nice as he appeared
to be during race broadcasts of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck
Series on Speed Channel. From his crewmen, to fellow drivers,
NASCAR officials, and sponsor reps the response was unanimous.
Everyone liked Cousin Carl and nothing seemed to ever

Making the Grade-Martinsville 2
By Dennis Michelsen (RaceTalkRadio.com)
The Car of Tomorrow on the Racetrack of Yesterday is an
interesting combination. A record twenty cautions is testament
to the fact that Crew Chiefs and drivers are having a
tough time getting this car to turn on the flatter tracks.
NASCAR better keep this track on the schedule twice every
season. This is the true test of driver and crew at one
of the series' classic old-school tracks... MORE

Making the Grade-Talladega 2
By Dennis Michelsen (RaceTalkRadio.com)
Congratulations NASCAR you managed to make racing at Talladega
boring for the first 150 laps! Maybe they need to put
a bonus out there for the guys to race for every twenty
laps at Daytona or add No-Doz as a corporate sponsor!

Doesn't Know Jacques About Talladega
By Dennis Michelsen
The announcement that Jacques Villeneuve would be making
his Nextel Cup racing debut at Talladega Super Speedway
came as a huge shock to me! But I was not the only person
that found this move disturbing. Two of NASCAR's drivers
competing for this year's title thought this decision
was troubling too. Villeneuve might be one of the greatest
drivers of our generation but he doesn't know JACQUES

Somewhere

Making the Grade-Kansas
By Dennis Michelsen
Rain delays, drama, and controversy added a movie-like
script to Sunday's adventure at Kansas Speedway known
as the Life Lock 400! If the rain had not stopped in time
Tony Stewart would have grabbed the win and a comfortable
lead in the Championship Chase. Instead the track dried
up in time for Greg Biffle to grab a controversial win
and for Stewart's Home Depot car and championship hopes
getting the hook... MORE

Snoozer
to Start the Chase
Making the Grade-NHIS 2
By Dennis Michelsen
NASCAR officials seem to love the comparison of their
sport to the NFL. They finally got it right this weekend
at New Hampshire International Speedway! After a full
week of non-stop hype for the start of the playoffs the
race itself was a real snoozer. Doesn't this remind you
of the Super Bowl almost every year? The talk of the sale
of NHIS and the moving of their dates to better tracks
sure was timed well! A race at Kentucky and a second race
at Las Vegas would be much better than this snooze-fest
to start the Chase!... MORE

Chase Roster
Making the Grade-Richmond 2
By Dennis Michelsen
Leave it to NASCAR to subtract excitement from the Chase
roster by adding two more members! Imagine the nail biting
among the ninth and tenth place drivers IF the old system
from last year was in place. The racing would have been
fast and furious gunning for position in the closing laps
with four drivers dueling for two spots! Instead we get
the artificial "Junior Watch" with a huge gap
between 12th and 13th place and a lot of what ifs that
never happened... MORE

Making the Grade-California Speedway 2
By Dennis Michelsen
Who is the idiot that chose this weekend for a race in
Southern California? Not only do we take away the traditional
Southern 500 but also the race is moved to a location
even more uncomfortable this time of the year than Darlington.

There was brand new pavement and a brave new Bristol!
In the old days, circa March, if you got up off the bottom

Herman
the New Bud Man Would Make Sense
By Dennis Michelsen
Silly Season continues to get sillier as Furniture Row
Racing discards Kenny Wallace to try different drivers.
What an idiotic move this is since no one
I repeat
no one
gives a car a better drive than Kenny Wallace!
For years he piloted under funded cars often getting better
results than anyone else before or after him did. So with
Silly Season going full throttle out of control I toss
one more idea into the mix. Herman would make the perfect

Making the Grade-Watkins Glen

NASCAR better make some rule changes for qualifying soon!
When you have great drivers such as Boris Said having

discourage NASCAR from caring about qualifying!... MORE

Leave
the Poor Lady Alone
By Dennis Michelsen
People love to get holier than thou nowadays! If something
is going wrong its not just an accident someone has to
carry the blame. This year Evernham Motorsports is struggling
through a horrible season. Last year Kasey Kahne won more
races than anyone else and looked like a possible pick
for the title in 2007. But all three Evernham Motorsports
teams have struggled. Elliott Sadler has the best spot
in the Championship points battle at 23rd. Kasey Kahne
after winning six times in 2006 has two top tens all season
in 2007. Scott Riggs has failed to qualify four times
and is stuck in 37th place. Surely someone has to be to
blame for this horrible performance... MORE

Maybe the racing from lap one to lap last is not as great
as some tracks, but the majesty that is the Brickyard

Starting
Spots Should Not be for Sale
By Dennis Michelsen
The NASCAR Nextel Cup circus is heading to its twentieth
race of the season and it looks as if one lucky team will
be able to buy their way into the show the rest of the
year! Bobby Ginn learned that the old joke is true about
how to make a small fortune in racing. He started with
a huge fortune and went racing this season. Now he will
merge with Dale Earnhardt Inc and Paul Menard will have
a starting spot guaranteed the rest of the season. That
is just fine, companies merge all the time. But one of
Bobby Ginn's car numbers will be left over and sold to
the highest bidder so they can make it in the show this
weekend. If NASCAR allows this mid-season fire sale of
JUST the number they are setting a bad precedent. Starting
spots should not be for sale!... MORE

The Busch guys finally took center stage with the Nextel

invaders from the Cup series stole the show! Reed Sorenson
had been winless for a long time, although not as long
as the Chicago Cubs who he threw out the first pitch for
this week. Reed chewed up the competition on Saturday
night in front of a packed house of crazy St. Louis area
race fans that sure showed how much they love their NASCAR

Provisionally
Speaking
By Dennis Michelsen
For many years I was one of those "We don't need
no stinkin' provisionals" kind of guys. The theory
about the fastest guys getting to race every week no matter
what appealed to me! But then I started working on the
inside of the short track-racing world and my eyes were
opened to the usefulness of provisional starting positions.
If they are used in moderation and with restrictions the
use of provisionals can help a series build a car count.
But when they are used week after week as often happens
in the NASCAR Nextel Cup series it is a joke! What ever
happened to limiting the number of provisionals anyone
can use? Provisionally speaking that old idea seems like
it should be in style again!... MORE

that get to race in NASCAR. Every day I thank God for

A $100,000 fine will not deter Hendrick Motorsports from
searching for an advantage! The 100 points that they lost
will be a footnote in the history of NASCAR long before
it has any affect on the 2007 season. The talent pool
at their company is so deep you could suspend half the

There is no doubt that Dale Earnhardt Junior is the biggest

what sponsor will be on the car and the rumor mill has

By Dennis Michelsen
Unless you left for a three-day trip to Mars you know
all about Dale Earnhardt Jr's move to Hendrick Motorsports.
There is no doubt that Junior picked his destination based
on his desire to win. Published reports and stories told
to me behind the scenes indicate that he was offered big
money to leave Chevy for Toyota but didn't even listen

Miles of Racing for the Tire Wars
By Dennis Michelsen
After nearly 1100 miles of racing between Speedway, Indiana
and Concord, North Carolina one startling truth was revealed.
The Greatest Spectacle in Auto Racing might have lost
some of its allure, but the tires on those cars are far
superior to those raced in NASCAR on Sunday night! Perhaps
the real winner after a Memorial Day weekend full of racing

We All Lose If We Ever Lose Martinsville
By Dennis Michelsen - Do you remember that first
time as a kid that your Dad took you to your first baseball
game? If you attended a game at one of the classic ballparks
such as Fenway Park or Wrigley Field that moment is etched
in time. I get that same feeling when I walk into one
of our classic racetracks. It is almost as if the ghosts
of races past still haunt the grounds of the old tracks.
They might have been fixed up with grandstands built to
the sky but if that track still carries any of its old
character listen close and you will hear those old time
races...MORE

Tomorrow
Finally Comes
Making the Grade-Bristol Spring Races
By Dennis Michelsen - They came, they saw, and they
seemed to hate it. Such was the almost universal reaction
of drivers and fans after the Car of Tomorrow made its
debut at Bristol this weekend. The introduction of the
new car design didn't affect Busch Whacking on Saturday
one bit with twenty Cup regulars in the race. Perhaps
the sponsors are hooked on Cup drivers and the teams will
not let go of that extra revenue stream! Since the Car
of Tomorrow was the Car of Yesterday can we come up with
a better nickname by next week? I like calling this the
"Wing" car versus the "Spoiler" car.
The big question is if the Bristol of Next August will
be better or worse of the Bristol of Yesterday. Now on
to this week's grades... MORE

Sad State of Busch Whacking
Bye Bye Busch Whackers-Bristol-Race 6
By Dennis Michelsen - The critics say that the new
Car of Tomorrow in the Nextel Cup series will bring an
end to or at least diminish the need for Busch Whacking.
While there is no doubt that so many Cup teams race the
Busch series to get more testing time there is always
something to be learned in other type of racing on the
same track. This week at Bristol Motor Speedway the cars
are different but the tires are the same! Twenty full
time Nextel Cup drivers raced in the Mini Sharpie 300
at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday... MORE

Change is Inevitable Except from a Vending Machine-
Here Comes of the Car of Tomorrow
By Dennis Michelsen
"Damn that thing is ugly!" - That is not a race
fan at Bristol Motor Speedway being quoted on Monday;
that is the usual chorus that accompanies any change in
racing. I am sure that Ben Hur was ridiculed for the strange
look of his chariot back in the day. The Car of Tomorrow
is here and all is well in the world. This is not some
sign of the apocalypse, racing will continue as it has
for years and years. There are some things such as death,
taxes, and changes in racing (increased costs too) that
you can count on in life as certainties. Change is inevitable
except from a vending machine!... MORE

Not So Hot Atlanta
Making the Grade-Atlanta Spring Races
By Dennis Michelsen - Hopefully NASCAR and Goodyear
will learn from their experience of the last two weeks.
Once again at Atlanta Motor Speedway teams encountered
tire issues. But this week teams were able to make adjustments
and drivers were able to drive the car differently to
minimize those impacts to the quality of the racing. This
is unlike the week before in Las Vegas when the tires
were harder than anything Fred Flintstone ever had on
his car! Hopefully NASCAR will not convince Goodyear to
throw those tires made of granite on the cars at Texas
Motor Speedway in a few weeks. Any time you give the racers
a choice they will choose having options to deal with
the tires! The resulting race was much better for the
fans too... MORE

A
Race of Their Own
Bye Bye Busch Whackers-Atlanta-Race 5
By Dennis Michelsen
Once again a Busch race occurred and it is hard to tell
there were some actual Busch drivers in the show! Twenty-six
Cup regulars started the race in the Nicorette 300 at
Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday. The top fourteen finishers
were all Nextel Cup regulars. Seventeen of the top twenty
finishers also raced on Sunday in the Cup race. An even
more troubling development is that very few independent
Busch teams even showed up to compete. When the Car of
Tomorrow becomes the car of everyday it will be interesting
to see how many Cup drivers abandon the Busch series...

Dear Mr. Martin-Don't Slow Down Now
By Dennis Michelsen
Dear Mr. Martin, - Ever since you broke on to the NASCAR
scene for the second time I have been a huge fan. Watching
you race so hard against the Intimidator Dale Earnhardt
at Dover in June of 1989 clinched it. When you announced
your retirement the first time in 2004 I was in shock.
Having covered the NASCAR beat part time I could understand
how the full time rigors of that schedule could drive
anyone nuts! But the classiest guy in NASCAR racing just
could NOT be leaving the sport when he had so many great
years ahead of him... MORE

No Call No One is Talking About
Making the Grade-Las Vegas Motor Speedway
By Dennis Michelsen - In other sports I understand
the concept of the officials being part of the field of
play. If the ball hits the ref, the game goes on and the
ball is still in play no matter which direction the ball
bounces. But in NASCAR should an official affect the outcome
of the race? During one of the final caution flags of
the UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400 an official changed the outcome
of the race by catching a tire from the No. 48 car that
was leaving his pit box. Perhaps Hendrick paid him off
to catch the tire to avoid another penalty!... MORE

Easy Fix for Busch Whacking
By Dennis Michelsen - NASCAR officials better be concerned
about only having forty-four cars show up to qualify for
the Sam's Town 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Whatever
happened to the days when the west coast guys were eager
to make a NASCAR show to impress team owners? Perhaps
the deck is stacked against these guys so much that it
isn't even worth the bother! But NASCAR can cure the Busch
Whacking problem in a very simple way. Entice more teams
to run the Busch series by getting sponsor dollars involved!...

Time for Some Cup Teams to Run Busch Instead
By Dennis Michelsen - This season the car counts
in the Nextel Cup season have been higher than ever before.
Not only have fifty-four cars shown up for the Cup race
at Las Vegas, but also so many of these teams have outstanding
funding. After two races several teams have yet to qualify
for a race and the odds are stacked against them this
year in Cup worse than the craps tables in Vegas! It is
time for a few teams to bail on their Nextel Cup dreams
for 2007 and settle for running the Busch series instead...

Nightmare Handicapping Scenario
Fantasy Insight-Las Vegas Motor Speedway
By Dennis Michelsen - Handicapping the unknowns is
the toughest part in picking winners in racing! The Las
Vegas Motor Speedway has been rebuilt and none of the
past notes for this place matter at all. Changing from
the flatter corners to the higher speed yet narrow turns
figures to have crew chiefs scratching their setups. The
only race run here since the rebuild was with the Craftsman
Trucks so not much could be learned. Test sessions at
the track caused concerns with tires, which led to NASCAR
adopting a smaller fuel cell for this race only. Perhaps
the best bet is to play the horsepower game... MORE

When Busch Whacking Might be Acceptable Behavior
Bye Bye Busch Whackers-Mexico City-Race 3
By Dennis Michelsen - Busch teams should qualify
under federal guidelines as an endangered species! But
as the spokes-pup for www.racerdogs.com
might say, "Sometimes Busch Whacking can be considered
acceptable behavior." The win by Juan Pablo Montoya
goes in the books as a Busch Whacker win for the Cup guys.
But with his inexperience in the bigger, heavier cars
it does make sense that he is being given every minute
of seat time available. Similarly the other rookies and
drivers that struggled to make the top 25 on the Cup side
in 2006 should also get the same pass too... MORE

On the Road to San Antonio Day Three
North and East Bound and Down Edition
By Dennis Michelsen - When the race is over I usually
high tail it for home right after the festivities end.
But since the folks at San Antonio Speedway believe in
doing everything bigger, the show didn't get done until
after Midnight! In addition to the outstanding ASA Late
Model race won by Colt James we got a full plate of other
racing too. My intentions were to make a dash for the
border northbound and get at least two or three hours
of driving done. But Midnight is well past my bedtime
so I barely got out of San Antonio before the sandman
started his nightly rounds. Beautiful blue sky replaced
all that evil weather I had on the way down so it turned
into the most relaxing 1300 mile trip I have ever had
in my life... MORE

On the Road to San Antonio Day Two
Boogity, Boogity, Boogity Edition
By Dennis Michelsen - Snow falling, forty-five mile
per hour gusts to the winds, and cold temperatures back
home but seventy-five degrees and sunshine in San Antonio?
Yes indeed it seems that I made a wise decision going
to work this weekend! Do you call this work? The stars
and cars of the ASA Late Model Series hit the track for
their first practice of the season and it only took a
few laps for the first wreck. But the other story was
the adventure in getting to the track. They do everything
bigger in Texas including traffic jams! So goes day two
on the road to San Antonio... MORE

On the Road to San Antonio
In Search of the Next NASCAR Star
By Dennis Michelsen - The NASCAR beat is not for
me! A few years ago I tried it on a part time basis, which
was very interesting. But after witnessing the zoo up
close and personal I gained respect for the insanity that
accompanies the NASCAR Nextel Cup traveling circus. There
are so many great writers on the NASCAR beat I decided
to spend most of my time in search of future stars. Last
season I introduced fans to Alex Kennedy from New Mexico,
James Buescher from Texas, and Landon Cassill from Iowa.
All three earned the title Star of Tomorrow and I am proud
with the performance of each of them in the past year!
But before you can report on the next rising NASCAR star
you have to get to the track. This is the tale of the
story behind the story as I go on the road to San Antonio
to cover the ASA Late Model Series opener... MORE

Car of Tomorrow: Will It Be Safer and More Competitive
By Dennis Michelsen - NASCAR has made a lot of promises
about the Car of Tomorrow, almost as bad as the last used
car salesman I met out on the lot! Just as the slick sales
guy will try to convince you that the car you are about
to buy is totally free of any problems, the NASCAR PR
machine has everyone convinced that the COT will be even
better than sliced bread! You can now add the arrival
of the COT on the NASCAR scene to those other inevitable
things in life
death and taxes. But will the COT
be safer and lead to more competitive racing?... MORE
