Anatomy
of a NASCAR Nickname

In any sport you know you have made it to the big time when you
earn a nickname and in NASCAR this is even truer than others.
This isn't some sort of nickname like "Dimples" that
comes naturally. This is a genuinely clever nickname that defines
you as a driver! Take a look back at some of the greatest drivers
in NASCAR history and you will see a great nickname. Would Dale
Earnhardt been as scary to have behind you if he was called "Tinkerbell"?
But have the "Intimidator" behind you in the black No.
3 and look out! Would the press have paid as much attention if
Richard Petty had been dubbed the "Squire" of NASCAR?
It just doesn't have that great ring to it! But how do these guys
get these nicknames? Last weekend on AM 1250 in Milwaukee I was
dragged right into the middle of nickname development. Only time
will tell if this one will stick!
T-Rex
Jason Taghikhani is an aspiring stock car driver on the long
arduous journey up the ranks. Jason was picked to be part of the
"Racin for a Livin" Wild Card drivers competing for
a spot on a racing reality television show. Taghikhani Motorsports
is comprised entirely of engineering students from Marquette University.
Last year Jason was "Rookie of the Year" in the tough
Mid-American Stock Car Series…a great stepping-stone to the
ASA Late Model Series this season. But with a name like "Taghikhani"
having fans screaming your name and pronouncing it right would
be tough! If there was ever a driver in need of a nickname it
was Jason! Steve "Sparky" Fifer of AM1250 in Milwaukee
came to the rescue! (Notice the cool nickname "Sparky?")
Since NASCAR Girl Summer Santana, Sparky, and myself were all
stumped; Sparky figured it was time to ask the listeners for help.
Several nickname ideas were presented and after two hours of spirited
voting the winner was proclaimed. Introducing Jason "T-Rex"
Taghikhani! Can you just picture the other drivers shuddering
at the thought of "T-Rex" munching on their bumper?
When he makes it to the big show the "Raptors" will
be pitting his car. Jason can thank AM1250 when he is famous.
A new nickname has been born. Remember to vote for Jason "T-Rex"
Taghikhani for "Wild Card" on Racin' for a Livin'…you
wouldn't want to see a great nickname go to waste!
