Easy Fix for Busch Whacking
By Dennis Michelsen

NASCAR officials better be concerned about only having forty-four cars show up to qualify for the Sam's Town 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Whatever happened to the days when the west coast guys were eager to make a NASCAR show to impress team owners? Perhaps the deck is stacked against these guys so much that it isn't even worth the bother! But NASCAR can cure the Busch Whacking problem in a very simple way. Entice more teams to run the Busch series by getting sponsor dollars involved! Imagine if the Busch regulars had a prize fund all to themselves to compete for every week. This same concept has made running for Rookie of the Year a great financial success. Perhaps a whole marketing campaign tied to development drivers would work great to get more teams to run non-Cup drivers in the Busch series. The Cup guys would still show up to get their practice time so the fields would have more competitive cars than they do now. In any business turning a weakness into a strength can go a long way to making your business model even better! In the weeks and months ahead we will see short fields for certain Busch events unless NASCAR gets involved now to make a difference. NASCAR caused this Busch Whacking mess by allowing Cup drivers to have provisional starting positions, something the Busch series did not allow for many years! Now they can turn their marketing machine loose to solve the problem with a separate points fund for the non-Cup drivers.
