State of Busch Whacking
Bye Bye Busch Whackers-Bristol-Race 6
By
Dennis Michelsen
The critics say that the new Car of Tomorrow in the Nextel
Cup series will bring an end to or at least diminish the
need for Busch Whacking. While there is no doubt that
so many Cup teams race the Busch series to get more testing
time there is always something to be learned in other
type of racing on the same track. This week at Bristol
Motor Speedway the cars are different but the tires are
the same! Twenty full time Nextel Cup drivers raced in
the Mini Sharpie 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday.
The setups that they will run with the Car of Tomorrow
are vastly different from the Busch Cars of Today. But
Busch Whacking has become such a regular way of life with
sponsors the drivers will still be required to Busch Whack!
Take a look at the Bye Bye Busch Whackers Top Ten. Scott
Wimmer is clearly talented enough and has the experience
to have a full time ride in either Busch or Cup. So why
is he only a part time driver? Youngster Danny O'Quinn
Jr won the Busch Rookie of the Year award last year but
he had to wait until this week to make his 2007 debut.
Other youngsters deserve a better chance than just a part
time effort such as Timothy Peters and Kevin Conway. Busch
Whacking is here to stay until NASCAR changes the qualifying
rules.
