When
Busch Whacking Might be Acceptable Behavior
Bye Bye Busch Whackers-Mexico City-Race 3
By Dennis Michelsen
Busch
teams should qualify under federal guidelines as an endangered
species! But as the spokes-pup for www.racerdogs.com
might say, "Sometimes Busch Whacking can be considered
acceptable behavior." The win by Juan Pablo Montoya
goes in the books as a Busch Whacker win for the Cup guys.
But with his inexperience in the bigger, heavier cars
it does make sense that he is being given every minute
of seat time available. Similarly the other rookies and
drivers that struggled to make the top 25 on the Cup side
in 2006 should also get the same pass too. Unfortunately
the landscape for getting and keeping sponsors almost
demands a Cup driver is in the seat as often as possible.
Whatever happened to companies developing talent? Can
you imagine if Dupont had insisted on Ernie Irvan as a
driver for their Busch team instead of taking a chance
on a young Jeff Gordon? Developing their own driver branded
Jeff Gordon as the Dupont guy for life! Sure that is an
extreme example and for every Jeff Gordon bursting on
to the scene there are twenty Steve Grissoms
good
drivers that never quite reach that next level and become
a superstar at the Cup level. How many great drivers have
ended their careers short due to a lack of Busch rides
over the last few years? Busch Whacking should be reserved
for those drivers needing extra seat time and not a test
session for the Cup drivers! It is time to remove the
ability for any driver in the top 25 in Cup from getting
a Busch provisional to even the playing field. This is
not some radical concept dreamed up by me but rather the
way NASCAR used to do things just a few years ago!
