Driver
Development Derails
Bye Bye Busch Whackers-Texas-Race 8
By Dennis Michelsen
It dawned on me a few weeks ago that NASCAR will be in
trouble in a few years if they do not makes changes to
the current Busch series. Take a look at the driver introductions
and see how many gray hairs can be seen. The day will
come that NASCAR's Nextel Cup division needs new drivers
to replace the veterans that will retire but the Busch
series will not be producing enough capable drivers to
take their places. Last Saturday in the O'Reilly 300 twenty-four
full time Cup drivers started in the Busch race. Some
will argue that if the Cup guys didn't race we wouldn't
have seen a full field. But the reality is that the healthy
Cup teams should be running more young drivers to develop
their future stars! It also wasn't that many years ago
that NASCAR didn't allow Cup drivers to earn provisional
starts in the Busch series. Simply changing back to that
old way of doing things would encourage sponsors to take
a chance on a new driver because at least they would be
guaranteed a starting position. NASCAR needs to be careful
on allowing their once strong driver development plans
to fall apart. Fresh new stars are needed to replace guys
that choose to retire or other Cup drivers that just lack
the talent to succeed at that high level of competition.
When driver development derails the Cup series will suffer.
