Bye Bye Busch Whackers-Texas-Race 9
By Dennis Michelsen
Back just a few years ago I enjoyed seeing the NASCAR
guys head to the left coast tracks. The invasion of the
west coast drivers was fun! There is a lot of talent out
west but we rarely hear much about these drivers. But
when NASCAR came to town it was an excuse for these guys
to take a shot at the big time by entering the races and
impressing the racing establishment back east. Now we
miss out on this chance to see the talent out west due
to coast and the lack of opportunities. The Busch series
is clogged with so many Cup drivers doing double duty
that there are no open rides for the west coasters. This
week DJ Kennington finished 27th in the Bashas' Supermarket
300, which might not seem so great until you realize he
did crack the Bye Bye Busch Whackers top ten! Ironically
DJ hails from the ranks of CASCAR and made his second
ever NASCAR start this week. One of the great feel good
western driver stories ended short during qualifying when
Riverside, California's Brian Pannone was the only driver
not to qualify for the race. This under funded team went
home while twenty-three Cup guys raced. Perhaps one of
the casualties of Busch Whacking is losing that trend
of giving these western drivers a chance in their own
backyard.
