5K
Motorsports Perseveres at Iowa Speedway
(For Immediate Release)
West
Bend, WI (May 22, 2007)-The race at Iowa Speedway is the
one everyone on the ASA Late Model Series Challenge division
points to as THE race to win. But sometimes a team just
has to grit their teeth and battle as hard as they can
to come home with the best finish they can. Last weekend
at Iowa Speedway the 5K Motorsports dynamic duo of Derek
Thorn and Kris Stump had high hopes entering the weekend.
Thorn was looking to add to his already impressive rookie
credentials while Stump was hoping to continue the turn
around that started at Hawkeye Downs the week before.
Unfortunately an early race wreck started Stump's night
on a downhill slide while a strange part malfunction on
Thorn's car would give him a handful to battle in the
final twenty-five laps. Derek Thorn was able to stay on
the lead lap and salvage a ninth place finish to keep
himself at the top of the Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie
Standings and in the hunt for the championship. The 5K
Motorsport's Challenge Division teams take a few weeks
off until June 16th at Berlin Raceway in Marne, Michigan.
This week the spotlight shines on the Northern Division
and fifteen year old Alex Kennedy as he races at Grundy
County Speedway in the Bob Milner Memorial 125.

Derek
Thorn at Iowa Speedway
This twenty one year old from Lakeport, California
raced his way out of the obscurity of the bullrings of
Northern California to get his ASALMS career off to a
fast start. So far this season Derek has collected a win
at Nashville, a runner up finish at Toledo, leads the
Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year Standings, and
is second in championship points. "We had a top five
car this week at Iowa Speedway but had a problem late
in the race with the suspension," said driver Derek
Thorn. "We battled and stayed on the lead lap though,
which will be a good points day for us under the circumstances."
This was the first trip to the Rusty Wallace Signature
Speedway for Derek and he loved racing here. "The
track is super smooth, all the facilities are first class,
and the people treat you great too," said Thorn.
"Our cars make a lot of down force and handle really
good on this track even though it's the fastest place
we go on the circuit." Derek is right in the hunt
for the ASALMS Championship as we near the halfway point
in the 2007 season. "The season is going by really
fast, " said Thorn. "Sitting second in points
as a rookie is pretty good and our goal the rest of the
year is to have fun and win more races!" Derek and
his 5K Motorsports team returns to action June 16th at
Berlin Raceway.
Kris
Stump at Iowa Speedway
Veteran driver Kris Stump joins 5K Motorsports for 2007
after a successful run with Allen-Hock Motorsports. His
fifth place finish last season in the Challenge Division
standings included four top five finishes. This twenty-six
year old from Tipp City, Ohio is a threat to win at any
track big or small. "I had high hopes going into
Iowa Speedway after my strong run here last year,"
said driver Kris Stump. "We fought a loose condition
and got up under the No. 25 car and I lost control going
into turn one. We put some new tires on it and I was making
my way through the field. I got into some grease from
the No. 8 car and spun in turn one tearing the car up
pretty bad." This super-consistent ASALMS veteran
has never seen a year quite like 2007. "This has
been the most disappointing and stressful season of my
career," said a dejected Kris Stump. "I have
never believed in luck but at this point I sure would
do anything to get some good luck on my side." Kris's
5K Motorsports team will try to help him turn his season
around at Berlin Raceway on June 16th.
Meet
5K Motorsports Teammate Alex Kennedy
Aztec, New Mexico's Alex Kennedy had an adventurous 2006
season. Starting the year in Legends cars at the Las Vegas
Road Course in January, he would have never guessed that
he would end the season making his debut in the ASA Late
Model Series in Nashville. ESPN's "Outside the Lines"
show would even feature Alex during a special about young
drivers! Nicknamed the "New Mexico Rising Star"
at his home track of Sandia Motorsports Park, Alex lived
up to that moniker with more firsts last season. Alex
was named a National Ambassador for Dream Factory Inc
in the off-season. Alex kicked off his 2007 Northern Division
season by qualifying 15th at O'Reilly Raceway Park. Next
up for Alex is this week's Bob Milner Memorial 125 at
Grundy County Speedway.
